Codes of Conduct
The following Codes of Conduct outline the standards that help ensure safety, sportsmanship, and accountability both in and out of the water. We ask all participants and families to review these carefully and uphold them throughout the season.
MSC ATHLETE CODE OF CONDUCT
- I will respect and show courtesy to my teammates and coaches at all times.
- I will demonstrate good sportsmanship at all practices and meets.
- I will set a good example of behavior and work ethic for my younger teammates.
- I will be respectful of my teammates’ feelings and personal space. Swimmers who exhibit sexist, racist, homophobic, or otherwise inappropriate behavior will be faced with consequences.
- I will attend all team meetings and training sessions, unless I am excused by my coach.
- I will show respect for all facilities and other property (including locker rooms) used during practices, competitions, and team activities.
- I will refrain from foul language, violence, behavior deemed dishonest, offensive, or illegal.
- If I disagree with an official’s call, I will talk with my coach and not approach the official directly.
- I will comply with anti-doping rules and submit to in-competition and out-of-competition drug testing.
- I will compete in the minimum amount of swim meets as required by MSC per swim season.
- I will obey all of USA Swimming’s rules and codes of conduct.
- I understand that if I violate this code of conduct, I will be subject to disciplinary action determined by my coaches and the swim club’s board of directors.
MSC PARENT CODE OF CONDUCT
MSC Parent Code of Conduct requires parents to demonstrate good sportsmanship, respect coaches, officials, and other swimmers, and support their child's participation without imposing their own ambitions or coaching the team. Key expectations include arriving on time, not interfering with coaches or officials, supervising their own children at meets, and maintaining appropriate behavior, including on social media, to uphold the integrity and safety of the sport.
General Conduct & Sportsmanship
Respect:
Parents must show common courtesy and respect to team members, coaches, officials, opposing teams, and facilities at all times.
Positive Behavior:
Act and dress professionally, setting a positive example for swimmers, and avoid challenging officials' decisions.
Supportive Role:
Nurture and support your child's involvement in swimming and recognize the coaches' authority and decisions.
Team & Coaching Interaction
No Coaching: Do not coach or instruct the team or any athlete during practices or meets.
No Interference: Do not interrupt coaches or interfere with their job while they are on the pool deck or during practices.
Communication: Keep coaches informed of any medical problems with your child and communicate absences via email.
Fairness: Treat all athletes fairly, justly, impartially, and with sensitivity.
Meets & Practices
Punctuality: Ensure your child arrives on time for practices and meets and is picked up promptly.
Supervision: Supervise your own child during meets and display appropriate behavior at all times.
Focus on Process: Focus on the process of training and improvement rather than solely on the outcome or winning.
Social Media & Technology
Responsible Online Behavior: Be mindful of what is posted to websites, email, and social media, understanding its far-reaching impact.
No Inappropriate Content: Refrain from posting inappropriate language or confidential information online, as all posts can be seen and shared.
Respect Privacy: Do not send or post anything to social media that you would not want to share with a coach, teacher, or religious leader.
Other Expectations
Volunteer: I will volunteer as stated and requested by MSC each swim season.
Adhere to Rules: Follow USA Swimming's rules and policies, including those related to the prevention of abuse.
MSC COACHES CODE OF CONDUCT
The purpose of this code of conduct for coaches is to establish common expectations for all members of the coaching staff. It is to be used as a guide to promote a positive team environment and good sportsmanship.
- At all times, adhere to USA Swimming's rules and code of conduct.
- Set a good example of respect and sportsmanship for participants and fans to follow.
- Act and dress with professionalism and dignity in a manner suitable to the profession.
- Respect officials and their judgment and abide by the rules of the event.
- Treat opposing coaches, participants, and spectators with respect.
- Instruct participants in sportsmanship and demand that they display good sportsmanship.
- Coach in a positive manner and do not use derogatory comments or abusive language.
- Win with humility and lose with dignity.
- Treat every athlete fairly, justly, impartially, intelligently, and with sensitivity.
- Always place the well-being, health, and safety of swimmers above all other
considerations, including developing performance.
Continue to seek and maintain their own professional development in all areas in relation to coaching and teaching children. - Always maintain a professional separation between coach and athlete. Any complaints of a coach violating this code of conduct will be brought to the attention of his/her supervisor and/or MSC's board of directors.
